ABOUT

Joey Newman is an Emmy®-nominated composer, conductor and drummer whose work has shaped both television and film landscapes with its emotional depth and creative style. With a career spanning over two decades, Newman has brought his distinctive musical voice to a variety of media, including critically acclaimed television series, award-winning feature films, and groundbreaking video games.

A graduate of the Berklee College of Music, Newman’s early career began as co-composer on Ed Zwick’s ABC drama Once and Again with W.G. Snuffy Walden, quickly establishing him as a rising talent in television scoring. Newman’s ability to pull from his band experience and orchestral training had him later scoring ABC’s long-running hit comedy The Middle; NCsoft’s video game Lineage, standing as a landmark in the online role-playing genre; and TLC’s hit docu-series, Little People, Big World, earning an Emmy® nomination for his work on the latter. His recent projects include composing for Peacock’s docu-series Krishnas: Gurus. Karma. Murder. and CBS’s legal drama All Rise.

From his ability to capture an intimate piano score for Alan Cumming’s heart-breaking performance in the film Any Day Now to the haunting and complex minimalist undertones of Melissa Leo’s character in The Space Between, each production's music is tailored to provide a distinct voice, brought to life through an innovative use of instrumentation and an openly creative dialogue with the filmmaker.

Newman approaches every project with a commitment to storytelling, believing that music is a vital part of shaping the emotional experience of film and television. “Writing music to picture is all about understanding each project’s cinematic language and how best I can support it,” he says. “It’s a collaborative process, and I’m always striving to be a creative partner in telling the story.”

Joey’s rich musical heritage includes his father, Joe Frank Carollo, who played bass and sang in the iconic 1970s rock group Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds. He is also part of the renowned Newman family of Hollywood composers, with his grandfather Lionel, great uncle Alfred, and cousins Randy, Thomas, and David all leaving an indelible mark on film music.
